Allergies

More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies each year. Whether it’s from food, plants and trees, chemicals or even animals and other products, a person’s allergies can be mild or severe to these substances.

Allergies occur when our body’s immune system become hypersensitive to a foreign substance. When that foreign substance is ingested or contacts the body, the immune cells in our body recognize the substance and sends powerful inflammatory chemicals like histamine and prostaglandins. The influx of immune cells to the affected areas causes local and global inflammation. This inflammatory response launches a cascade of symptoms, from itching and sneezing to nausea and vomiting. When the reaction occurs across the entire body, it can even be life threatening. Prolonged, chronic inflammation due to the exposure of these allergens is the most damaging to the body.

Allergies can be managed with avoiding exposure to the substance. Natural anti-inflammatory foods such as turmeric, pineapple, blueberries, and other foods high in antioxidants can lower inflammation in the body, which may help suppress the allergic response. Supplements such as probiotics and natural anti-histamine compounds can also decrease symptoms and improve overall immune function.

The nervous system is directly correlated the immune system. Chiropractic research has shown that one chiropractic adjustment can boost the immune system up to 200%! By positively affecting the nervous system, the immune system function can normalize and help the body’s ability to cope with foreign substances and decrease the allergic response.

Managing allergies is an important topic for many as it affects a portion of our society. By limiting exposure to provoking substances as well as good dietary habits and lifestyle changes, allergies can be managed very effectively and won’t be something to worry about during the changing seasons.
